Open Science & Research Policies

The Kempner Institute is committed to making the research it funds as widely and easily available as possible through our Open Science Policies. These policies require that all Kempner-funded work be made publicly available, an extend to all elements of Kempner research, including: data, developed software, code, patentable inventions, reagent sharing, publications and experimental protocols.

Our Open Science Policies aim to ensure that all Kempner research is available for other scientists to use, reproduce, and harness, thereby supporting the broader mission of advancing intelligence research and promoting groundbreaking discovery within the field.

Kempner’s Open Science Policies reflect our commitment to making research funded by the Kempner Institute as widely and easily available as possible. All recipients of Kempner Institute funding are required to sign the Harvard University Participation Agreement prior to receiving funding.

Below are guidelines for when the Kempner Institute’s Open Science Policies apply to research that was partially conducted elsewhere.

  • If minimal work happened at the Kempner (e.g. analysis/code was complete, manuscript only needed minor editing and posting) then the Kempner’s open science policies would definitely not apply.
  • If more than minimal work (e.g. work beyond light editing of completed manuscript) was completed at the Kempner then the open science provisions might apply. Drafting the manuscript using data and analysis completed before you came may or may not be enough to trigger open science provisions. In these cases, please contact Elise Porter for guidance given your specific circumstances.
  • If experimental work took place at the Kempner (particularly if you used our cluster to perform new experiments, or you use any portion of your research funding to support the work) the open science policies would definitely apply.

Affiliations

Any work supported in whole or part with Kempner Institute resources, including financial support or use of the Kempner Institute computational cluster, should include the Kempner Institute in the acknowledgments and be listed in your affiliations.

When naming the Kempner Institute in your list of affiliations, please use the Institute’s full name: Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University. If space demands, this may be shorted to Kempner Institute at Harvard University, or in cases with very limited space Kempner Institute, Harvard University.

Acknowledgements

For acknowledgments, we suggest the following wording: “This work has been made possible in part by a gift from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Foundation to establish the Kempner Institute for the Study of Natural and Artificial Intelligence at Harvard University.”

If space demands, this may be shortened to: “This work has been made possible in part by a gift from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Foundation to establish the Kempner Institute at Harvard University.”

Work partially undertaken at a different institution

Please note the following guidelines for when work was partially undertaken at a previous or different institution:

  • If minimal work happened at the Kempner (e.g. analysis/code was complete, only needed minor editing and posting) then you should acknowledge only the prior institution.
  • If more than minimal work (e.g. work beyond light editing of completed manuscript) was completed at the Kempner then you should acknowledge both.
  • In either case, you should list both your current affiliation at Kempner, and the site in which you initiated the project (however that is accomplished in the context of where you are publishing).

Harvard University has a number of research policies and resources to help to ensure the safe and responsible pursuit of research. For more information and guidance navigating the complex and changing compliance landscape, please visit Research Policies & Compliance.
