About
Ella Batty is a Senior Machine Learning Research Scientist within the Research and Engineering Team at the Kempner Institute, where she focuses on NeuroAI research.
Previously, Ella served as the Associate Director of Educational Programs at the Kempner Institute, overseeing curriculum development and program delivery for various educational initiatives such as the graduate fellowship, post-baccalaureate program, and undergraduate research programs. She continues to contribute to the institute’s educational mission by helping to organize and run workshops as part of the Workshops @ Kempner series. Dedicated to open science and open education, Ella served as Executive Director and currently serves as a Board Member of Neuromatch, a nonprofit organization devoted to facilitating global collaboration and accessible education in the computational sciences.
Ella earned her PhD in Neurobiology & Behavior from Columbia University, where she developed machine learning approaches for modeling neural responses and behavior.
Research Focus
Ella’s research bridges computational neuroscience and machine learning to uncover principles of neural computation and cognition. She is particularly interested in how neural circuits process, represent, and learn from complex data. By leveraging computational modeling, data-driven approaches, and expertise in scientific programming and high-performance computing, Ella integrates engineering with research to enable large-scale investigations, advancing our understanding of intelligence in both natural and artificial systems.
