Can AI Save Democracy?

Matthew Botvinick

Date: Friday, January 24, 2025 Time: 2:30 - 4:00pm

Join us for a talk by Matthew Botvinick, Senior Director of Research at Google DeepMind and Honorary Professor at Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, University College London. This talk is part of the Kempner Seminar Series, a research-level seminar series on recent advances in the field.

Democracy is at a cross-roads worldwide, with widespread distrust in democratic institutions and a spreading trend toward illiberal politics. Digital technology has received some of the blame for this malaise. I’ll consider whether one form of digital technology, artificial intelligence, might instead help us reinvigorate democracy. Among a number of related topics, I’ll talk about research in which we’ve investigated whether AI might facilitate democratic deliberation by helping real people find common ground in potentially contentious discussions.
