Core Research Community

Our core research community undertakes the major scientific work of the institute, driving forward advances in intelligence research using the Kempner AI cluster, one of the largest academic computing clusters in the world.

Faculty

Institute Investigators are leaders in the field of intelligence and are the core faculty advancing the work of the Kempner Institute. They hold joint faculty appointments within the Kempner and among one of the schools at Harvard. Institute Investigators have offices and research labs within the Kempner Institute.

Associate Faculty undertake research that advances the core mission of the Kempner Institute and help to advance its research and educational programs. Associate faculty hold three-year appointments with the Kempner, and have full-time faculty appointments within departments across Harvard University.

Fellows & Scholars

Research Fellows are leading, early-stage postdoctoral scientists conducting research that advances the fundamental understanding of intelligence. Kempner research fellows join the institute for three years, and work between fields to investigate new research questions focused on natural and artificial intelligence.

Graduate Fellows are incoming and continuing Harvard Ph.D. students, who apply and are awarded fellowships at the Kempner to support research in line with the institute’s core mission. Graduate Fellows undertake their graduate work within departments across the university, are mentored by a Kempner faculty member, and actively engage in ongoing Kempner educational and community programming.

Post-baccalaureate Scholars are recent college graduates who join the Kemper to gain research experience in advance of applying to Ph.D. programs in intelligence research. The 2-year program offers extensive mentored research alongside academic coursework and professional development opportunities.

Research & Engineering Team

Research and Engineering Team members have expertise in machine learning research and engineering. They include research scientists, experts in research software engineering, big data architects, and technical project managers. They enable research across the Kempner Institute by supporting projects, creating new tools and resources, providing training to community members, and helping to ensure optimal use of the Kempner AI cluster.
