The AI Scientific Revolution Will Be Driven by Open-Ended and AI-Generating Algorithms
Jeff Clune, Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, co-founder of Recursive, Canada CIFAR AI Chair, Faculty Member at the Vector Institute
Foundation models (e.g. large language models) create exciting new opportunities in our longstanding quests to produce open-ended and AI-generating algorithms, wherein agents can truly keep innovating and learning forever. In this talk, Jeff Clune will introduce quality diversity, open-ended, and AI-generating algorithms and share recent work harnessing the power of foundation models to unleash the potential of these algorithms to advance AI, including the creation of recursively self-improving AI. Clune will cover recent work including POET, OMNI (Open-endedness via Models of human Notions of Interestingness), Video Pre-Training (VPT), Genie, Automatically Designing Agentic Systems (ADAS), the Darwin Gödel Machine, HyperAgents, and The AI Scientist.
This talk is part of the Kempner Seminar Series, a research-level seminar series, open to the public, that covers topics related to the basis of intelligence in natural and artificial systems.
