Research & Engineering Team
The Kempner Institute’s research scientists and research engineers engage directly with the Kempner’s faculty, fellows, and students to advance critical research efforts and support the Kempner’s large scientific community.

The Kempner Institute’s Research & Engineering teams are a cross-disciplinary group of research scientists and research engineers covering a wide spectrum of research areas and engineering knowledge. With deep expertise in computational neuroscience, machine learning, engineering and high-performance computing, they are uniquely positioned for novel research in large-scale natural and artificial intelligence research.
Working as a collaborative group, our research scientists and research engineers engage directly with the Kempner’s faculty, fellows, and students to advance institute projects.

Together, they apply insights from cutting-edge scientific research in AI architectures and computing hardware architectures. This includes developing novel AI approaches that may provide insight about the brain, as well as training and fine-tuning large language models, optimizing their performance at scale. The teams draw on specializations in computational neuroscience, machine learning, scientific programming, software engineering, cloud computing, and GPU architecture.
Kempner Senior Director of AI/ML Research Engineering Max Shad leads the Kempner’s team of expert ML research engineers, full stack developers, data architects, and research computing engineers. These experts have a range of skill sets, and are able to undertake projects across a broad research engineering continuum to help advance critical research efforts and support the Kempner’s large scientific community.
